Don't you have your own web hosting?
If you have taken an IT Toolkit module, most probably you can re-use your web server you used in the last term. Hosting service are usually bought for 12 months.
If you do not know how to access your existing web server or lost your password, look at the welcome message you have received when you bought your account. If you cannot find this message or it did not help you to solve your problem, or your site is not working due to technical problems like exceeding your bandwidth, try to contact their customer service. They will be delighted to help you as this will normally keep you as paying customers.
Kingston University Web Hosting
Kingston University provides a web server for the students. The ftp data are as follows:
- Host:
- studentnet.kingston.ac.uk
- Username:
- k0123456
- Password:
- your-account-password
- Your files will be visible at:
Of course, you have to substitute k0123456 with your real k number.
If you have a problem to connect, especially from outside of the University, try to replace the host name with something like this:
- Host:
- sftp://studentnet.kingston.ac.uk
This server has been very recently updated and is now a very good quality. However, if you have any problems, just fill-in your questionnaire, and describe the problems you had with accessing the server.
External Hosting
Another solution could be acquiring a new account with an external web hosting company. However, I don't recommend widely available free hosting services - most often they are of very poor quality, and they tend to intercept and modify your files, adding advertising content. Instead, buying a domain and reliable hosting may be really a good idea, as the pay off in the future may be significant. I cannot recommend any particular company - please use Google. There are plenty of them!
Please notice that sites offering sophisticated wizards to accompany you with a nice design will not be appropriate for you unless they allow to submit pure HTML. You are supposed to create your pages from scratch, not use wizardry.
You have a server but don't know how to upload files?
The appropriate tool for your files upload is a ftp client. I'm sure that by now you know how to use ftp client (you've gone through IT Toolkit after all), and if not - it's easy to find some advice in the net.
The ftp client that I recommend is Filezilla. You can download it for free and install on your computer, but it also comes pre-installed at all the Faculty computers.
